Marilles, together with the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), is leading the Eco Rok project in the Balearic Islands. This initiative is dedicated to accelerating the transfer of technology and knowledge in response to the spread of the invasive algae Rugulopteryx okamurae. The goal is twofold: to collaborate on detecting the algae and developing protocols in preparation for its possible arrival in the Balearic Sea and to raise public awareness about the environmental and socioeconomic consequences that would ensue. The project is supported by the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education and involves organisations from the Balearic Islands, Andalusia, Cantabria, Galicia, the Region of Murcia, and the Valencian Community.

‘Organizations from six different regions are working together to design the best responses to the spread of the Asian algae. Although it has not yet been detected in the Balearic Islands, it is crucial that we prepare for the possible arrival of this invasive species, which would have serious consequences both for our marine ecosystems and for sectors that depend directly on them, such as fishing and tourism.’
