This document sets out a conceptual and practical framework for understanding what marine ecological restoration is — and what it is not —, distinguishing it from other related approaches. It summarises key concepts and the existing legal framework, and provides examples of restoration projects focused on the marine environment, with particular attention to the Balearic Sea. This sea is a region of particular importance due to its high biodiversity, but also because of the vulnerability of its ecosystems to human pressure and the effects of climate change.
