Love the sea at home
The Covid19 pandemic has caught us all off guard. On top of the loss of life, the job losses have thrown the future of countless families and businesses in doubt. This sudden end to economic activity could bring benefits to the natural world but at Marilles this isn’t how we view the need to reconcile the economy with the environment and well-being. We don’t need an economic catastrophe in order to improve the environment. A healthy environment is the guarantee of economic stability. That’s why the conservation of the Balearic Sea must be at the centre of islands’ economic recovery. In this context, our mission takes on particular importance: to transform the Balearics into a world-leading example of marine conservation, guaranteeing local people’s economic prosperity and well-being.
A study led by Carlos Duarte and published in Nature concluded that there is still time to recover 60-90% of marine life and perhaps it won’t take as long as we thought. But we have to remember that none of this will be possible if we don’t stop global warming, end over-fishing, create effective marine protected areas and reduce pollution.
