A shared responsibility. PHASE 4
GEN-GOB works towards achieving an environment of ecological and social sustainability in Ibiza and Formentera. For over five years, they have led the project The Sea, A Shared Responsibility (La mar, una responsabilidad compartida), which enables everyone involved – fishers, diving centres, the nautical sector, NGOs, and the government – to work together in the conservation and management of the marine environment.
This project has played a very important role in the development of management plans and conservation measures for the Natura 2000 marine areas in Ibiza and Formentera. It has also laid the foundations for a methodology and has become a template for the rest of the Balearic Islands and other marine areas of the Spanish coast.
“Protected marine areas are a fundamental instrument for achieving an ecological and social balance within the coastal communities. Thanks to support from Marilles we are developing mechanisms of governance which will allow us to improve the involvement of all parties dealing with the sea, and to move towards a joint management of the marine environment.”
