MED30: 30x30 MPA goal in the Mediterranean
MED30 is a project of the Med Sea Alliance led by Marilles, Oceana, and Ecologistas en Acción. Its objective is to achieve the effective protection of 30% of the Spanish Mediterranean by 2030, with 10% strict protection. In other words, one in every ten hectares of the sea must be free of pressures that compromise its environmental health and pose a threat to biodiversity. These aims are aligned with the 30×30 global initiative ‘A Global Deal For Nature’. The EU also supports these commitments. In addition, Spain has expressed its support for the 30×30 strategy, especially in the marine environment, and has committed to achieving 25% protection by 2025 as an intermediate step towards the final objective.
