This study is the first detailed assessment of the ecological relevance of the Balearic Sea, based on the best spatial data available. It includes 324 spatial layers and has been guided by a committee of experts.
The report also constitutes a methodological framework for identifying areas of ecological significance and moving towards the 10×30 protection target, which can be applied to other regions. One of the conclusions is that 13% of the marine area of the Balearic Sea is of high or very high ecological importance.
Study carried out by Alicia Gran and Patricia Puerta and coordinated by the Marilles Foundation as part of the MED30 project.
