Plastic concentrations on Balearic beaches are up to 30 times higher than the Mediterranean average

The sea mirrors our production and consumption model. In the Balearic Islands, this reality is especially visible. In a context marked by intense tourism pressure and rising public costs associated with waste cleaning and management, plastic concentrations in the marine environment can be up to 30 times higher than the Mediterranean average. Prevention represents a strategic opportunity for coastal municipalities: investing in reuse systems and waste reduction at source can reduce the presence of plastics, generate savings, and improve the quality of the tourist experience.
In this context, the Platges Residu Zero strategy promotes a comprehensive awareness-raising and reuse programme to transform the current model and move towards more sustainable beaches.
