6 Existing legal objectives
If properly implemented the following legal commitments will take us a long way in improving the state of the Balearic and secure the long-term sustainability of the islands:

- Approved management plans for all Natura 2000areas, which include Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Areas for birds (SPA). European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds. More information: Natura Balears network, at http://xarxanatura.es/es/

- Good environmental status for Balearic and other EU marine waters by 2020. Good environmental status is defined according to 11 descriptors and multiple indicators for each one of them. - Fish populations managed sustainably and reach Maximum Sustainable Yield. Fishing opportunities allocated to those that deliver higher environmental, economic and social performance. - The sale of various single-use plastic products such as cups, plates, cutlery and trays is forbidden from 20 March 2021; other obligations for elimination and prevention of waste also come into effect.
