Farewell to Marta Sales

Marilles Foundation expresses our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Marta Sales, a marine researcher who collaborated with the Socio-Environmental Observatory of Menorca (OBSAM). Marta was one of the first people we met with to learn more about the conservation status of Menorca's coastline, in particular shallow bays and algae of the genus Cystoseira, her speciality.

In 2020, she coordinated the study we funded with OBSAM to assess the conservation status of Menorca's coves and beaches based on the presence or absence of this algae, to which she dedicated much of her scientific career.

Marta was a leading exponent of the conservation of Cystoseira forests, one of the most valuable habitats we have on our coasts, but one that often does not receive the attention it deserves. Throughout her career, she highlighted its importance, launching the most successful restoration ever documented, in Cala Teulera (Maó). She played a key role in the expansion of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve in the marine environment and also in the creation of the Isla del Aire Marine Reserve.

Always generous with her time, Marta selflessly shared her knowledge and experience. Her help was fundamental in launching the shallow bay conservation programme, one of our priorities. She answered our countless questions to help us prepare projects and disseminate knowledge by participating in numerous talks and interviews.

We were fortunate to share a panel on shallow bays at the FORO MARINO 2020 together with Kike Ballesteros, a leading figure with whom Marta also had a close professional relationship and whom we also miss.

Thank you very much, Marta, for everything you gave us. You can be sure that we will continue working to protect, conserve, and restore shallow bays and your beloved Cystoseiras.
