Position Overview
The Project Assistant on MPAs will play a key role in the development and implementation of the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) strategy in the Balearic Sea, including both state and regional waters. Their work will contribute to improving marine conservation in the region, ensuring effective management, and promoting a long-term strategy. This position requires full-time (100%) dedication.
The Project Officer will report to the 30x30 Program Lead of Marilles, who leads a campaign in Spain to push for 30x30 and 10x30 in Spain. Marilles is an NGO that works to transform the Balearic Islands into a world reference for marine conservation. Since 2018, we have funded more than 100 projects led by local organizations to improve the Balearic sea and coast. Our mission is to make the Balearic Islands a global example of marine conservation. This project is conducted in partnership with other environmental organizations, such as Ecologistas en Acción and Oceana.
Responsibilities
Strategy and Development:
- Develop and implement the Balearic 2030 MPA strategy.
- Support species conservation efforts and the creation of new highly protected areas in the Balearic Sea.
- Represent Marilles in participatory processes related to MPAs.
- Collaborate in the management of marine conservation projects in both state and regional waters.
- Support the SARKO project in matters related to MPAs and species conservation.
Management and Coordination:
- Oversee the implementation of projects within marine protected areas.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of conservation measures in MPAs.
- Establish synergies with other organizations and relevant entities in marine management.
- Coordinate actions with governmental institutions and key stakeholders in marine management.
External Relations and Communication:
- Represent Marilles at forums, meetings, and events on MPAs.
- Support the dissemination of marine conservation progress through media and networks.
- Prepare reports and technical documents to support MPA-related work.
Requirements:
- A Degree (Bachelor, Master or Doctorate) in topics related to the role.
- 3 years of experience in marine conservation, particularly in Marine Protected Areas.
- Knowledge of marine management policies at both state and regional levels.
- Strong strategic planning and teamwork skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with various stakeholders.
- Fluency in Catalan, Spanish and English (French, German, etc. is a plus).
- Residence in Mallorca or another Balearic Island.
- Driving license.
- Availability for occasional travel.
