Opmallorcamar and Calant Xarxes sign agreement to promote sustainable fishing

Opmallorcamar (OPP) and the Calant Xarxes Alliance signed a collaboration agreement to promote the development of sustainable fishing in Mallorca. Pedro Mercant, president of OPP and Elisa Martínez, coordinator of Calant Xarxes, ratified the agreement during a ceremony attended by the president of the Federació Balear de Confraries de Pescadors (Federation of Fishermen's Guilds of the Balearic Islands), Domingo Bonnín, and the director of Marilles Foundation, Aniol Esteban, among other representatives of the fishing sector of the islands.

Martínez explained that this agreement is a very positive step towards improving the sustainability of fisheries in the Balearic Islands, as it recognises fishers as their best allies. ‘We want to make their work and their efforts to comply with regulations visible and support them in jointly identifying improvements that will allow us to generate a high-quality, traceable and environmentally-friendly supply of Balearic seafood products.’

Marcial Caracena, Commercial Director of OPP, stated: ‘Signing this collaboration agreement allows us to promote responsible, traceable, top quality local seafood products, making our own brand, Millor quín, known.’

The Calant Xarxes Alliance

The Calant Xarxes Alliance is made up of Mallorca Preservation, Marilles Foundation, Ibiza Preservation, Menorca Preservation, Conservation Collective, and Blue Marine Foundation. It works with fishers and different stakeholders in the value chain to become allies in the conservation of the Balearic Sea, by sourcing traceable Balearic seafood, improving their fisheries, and simultaneously eradicating illegal fishing to improve the sustainability of fisheries in the Balearic Islands.

These organisations have led local initiatives on all four islands. With their support, the project aims to create a common framework for responsible fishing in the Balearic Islands, respecting the realities of each island, finding synergies, and sharing experiences.

This agreement seeks to amplify the development of the responsible fishing brand Millor quín as a tool to guide consumers towards restaurants that source local fish responsibly. It also aims to make visible, through the Millor quín certification of its vessels, those fishers who comply with the law, guaranteeing the proper handling of the product and care for the environment.

With this collaboration in favour of sustainable fishing, the Calant Xarxes Alliance and OPP reaffirm their commitment to the conservation of the marine environment and seek to return the Balearic Sea to a state that generates abundance for all.

This initiative is supported by the TUI Care Foundation.
