A team of biologists and economists are working on a study to show the benefits that the sea and coast contribute to the economy of Ibiza and Formentera. They want to quantify the benefits that extra marine protection would generate for fishing, tourism, and other economic activities, and evaluate ecosystem services such as carbon capture in Posidonia meadows.

The study is supported by National Geographic, Ibiza Preservation, the Marine Forum, Vellmarí and Marilles. The results can contribute useful information to manage the marine environment of Ibiza and Formentera and lay the foundations for a sustainable tourism model.

“The marine environment offers many biological and socio-economic benefits, and the economic activity of Formentera depends on it directly or indirectly. It is essential to perceive this relationship if we are to go forward collectively towards a better conservation of the island’s sea and coast.”
