2nd Conference on the Conservation of Marine Biodiversity in the Balearic Islands

Marilles Foundation, in collaboration with the Sa Nostra Foundation and with funding from CaixaBank, is organising the Conference on the Conservation of Balearic Marine Biodiversity for the second consecutive year. This series of three events is dedicated to the protection and recovery of marine species and vulnerable habitats in the Balearic Sea.

The conference promotes cooperation between researchers, managers, and civil society to advance marine conservation through the creation of monitoring protocols, the optimisation of resources allocated to research, and the development of concrete action plans for the recovery of threatened habitats and species. The sessions will take place at the headquarters of the Fundació Sa Nostra, Can Tàpera, Palma. They will be attended by representatives of the central and Balearic governments, as well as numerous experts from scientific institutions and the third sector, and will be organised over three working days:

  • 16 October – Effective protection of the Balearic Sea
  • 23 October – Conservation of marine mammals in the Balearic Sea
  • 30 October – Water quality: Causes, impacts, and solutions

As a result of last year's conference, Marilles presented the Balearic government with three documents containing management proposals for the conservation of essential habitats and species in the Balearic Sea: shallow bays, sharks and rays, and corals and gorgonians. This set of proposals forms a roadmap with a series of action lines and a chronological proposal for their implementation.

Many of the recommendations on sharks and rays have been included in the Balearic government's Action Plan for the Conservation of Sharks and Rays.
