Blue Routes launched in Menorca: swimming and snorkelling trails along the island's coastline

Marilles Foundation presents in Menorca its new Vies Blaves (Blue Routes) initiative, a proposal to develop a network of swimming and snorkelling trails that combines outdoor recreation with a deeper understanding of the sea and the coastal environment. The project aims to promote a new way of enjoying the coastline, based on respect for nature and the active involvement of the different sectors connected to the island.

Blue Routes are conceived as clearly marked stretches of coastline, equipped with buoys and information panels, allowing people to swim and snorkel safely. The initiative is designed as a Balearic-wide network under a shared brand that can be adopted by each municipality. It pursues three main objectives: bringing people closer to the island's coastal marine ecosystems and raising awareness of their value; promoting the shared management of coastal use; and improving the safety of open-water swimmers beyond designated bathing beaches.

The project draws inspiration from Vies Braves, Catalonia's network of coastal swimming routes and seaside trails, established in 2014 by long-distance swimmer Miquel Sunyer.

The presentation will take place on Thursday 9 July at Es Claustre (Maó) and will include a keynote talk by Miquel Sunyer, followed by a round-table discussion bringing together representatives from the environmental, tourism and sports sectors, as well as public authorities, to share experiences and explore the potential of this model in Menorca.

As Sunyer explains: "Few Mediterranean islands have such a strong identity linked to nature as Menorca. Blue Routes provide a way for both residents and visitors to connect directly with this extraordinary natural heritage. It's not simply about swimming; it's about understanding and appreciating the marine environment. We protect what we value, and we value what we know."

Aniol Esteban, Director of Marilles Foundation, describes Blue Routes as: "Coastal swimming corridors that create a safe space for bathers and swimmers while showcasing the remarkable natural heritage beneath our waters and making it accessible to everyone. They establish a safe environment not only for people, but also for the fragile marine life that inhabits our coastline.". Esteban adds: "This project reflects the kind of relationship with the sea that we want to encourage across the Balearic Islands: one that combines conservation, safety, health and local development through responsible use of the marine environment."

The event is supported by GOB Menorca. According to Oriol Radalga: "Blue Routes can help balance the different uses of the coastline, create safer spaces for non-motorised activities and foster a more respectful relationship with the coast."

Toni Huguet, from the Menorca Channel Swimming Association, says: "We have the most beautiful shade of Mediterranean blue anywhere in the world. Now our challenge is to make it possible for everyone to enjoy it safely throughout the year."

Icia Fernández, from ARTIEM Hotels, comments: "Launching initiatives such as this means investing in a healthier and more active community while protecting the island's natural environment. Opening these routes strengthens our connection with the Mediterranean through sport and encourages a greater commitment to caring both for our own wellbeing and for the environment. A society that is active and connected to its surroundings is ultimately a happier society with a better quality of life."

Helena Vilchez, Councillor for the Environment at Mercadal Town Council, concludes: "Creating Blue Routes responds to a long-standing demand in Fornells Bay. We believe this initiative could also be extended to other sections of the municipality's coastline, particularly near beaches. Our aim is to develop swimming routes that bring people closer to the sea in a safer, more sustainable and environmentally responsible way."
