Sandra Espeja, our colleague and coordinator of the citizen marine science programme in the Balearic Islands, Observadores del Mar (Sea Watchers), took part in seminars marking the 30th anniversary of the declaration of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve. Espeja shared a dialogue with the director of the Menorca Preservation Foundation, Rebecca Morris, which focused on the conservation of the marine environment and citizen engagement.
During the conversation, the two speakers analysed the actions that have been taken over the last few years on the island with regard to marine conservation. They also talked about the challenges facing our sea today and have projected their glance towards the future. In this regard, they underlined that community engagement, good monitoring indicators, and transparency are some of the essential ways to achieving the objectives of marine conservation projects.
Since 1989, Institut Menorquí d'Estudis has been organising scientific seminars to analyse the evolution of the island as a biosphere reserve. This year, they focused on the socioeconomic and environmental challenges that Menorca has to faceby 2030 in line with the sustainable development goals. Running from 12 to 16 February, the programme includes presentations and roundtables on different topics. The presentation of the conclusions will take place on the 24th.
