At Marilles, we are working to protect and restore the underwater forests of the Balearic Sea. These forests of seagrass meadows and algal communities are essential for marine biodiversity, coastal protection, and the overall health of the sea.
Over three years (2026–2028), we will carry out restoration actions in at least five shallow bays across the Balearic Islands, supporting local, on-the-ground projects and working to ensure that the Balearic government approves an action plan to protect and restore these highly fragile habitats.
Funded by the Aptenia Foundation, the programme combines science, direct action, and social engagement. We will collaborate with research centres, NGOs, public authorities, local businesses, and coastal communities to reduce pressures on bays, improve the management of marine protected areas, and restore seagrass meadows, structural algae, and associated species, such as seahorses.
Through this initiative, we will lay the foundations for real change beneath the surface: healthier bays, more resilient ecosystems, and underwater forests that are recognised and cared for as a key natural heritage for the future of the Balearic Sea.
