Shark and ray experts debate the role of marine protected areas in preserving these species

Around 20 experts on sharks and rays gathered on 20 November at the Marine Research Centre (CIMAR) in Santa Pola for a scientific-technical conference to discuss the role of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the conservation of elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean.

Two of the main objectives of this workshop were to strengthen cooperation and share knowledge among the scientific community for the protection of these species in the Spanish Mediterranean. The session focused on analysing the current situation of ISRA (Important Shark and Ray Areas) and their conservation and management needs. The participants also analysed the difficulties involved in the designation process for these areas and identified species for which there are gaps in the information available.

This meeting, organised by the University of Alicante in collaboration with Marilles Foundation, within the framework of the e-Lasmobranc and SARKO projects, is the first step towards creating a document of proposals for action. This analysis will be shared with the relevant administrations and institutions to improve the management and designation of ISRAs and, ultimately, advance the protection of sharks and rays, species that are essential for ensuring the balance of the Mediterranean Sea's ecosystems.

The e-Lasmobranc project is supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, through the Pleamar Programme. It is co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFF) of the European Union.
