Mediterranean Islands Collective
The Mediterranean Basin is the world's second biodiversity hotspot, with an exceptional diversity of flora and fauna and a very high level of endemism – it is incredibly rich in many different species. However, the intense pressure to which the Mediterranean Islands are subjected puts their biodiversity at risk.
A group of organisations working on islands in the Mediterranean have come together to develop a common strategy and action plan to protect the basin’s biodiversity. Marilles is leading the development of two economic studies of relevance for all islands: a cost-benefit analysis of the extension of marine protected areas and a model for sustainable tourism.
The Mediterranean Islands Collective (MIC) involves the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN-Med), Conservatoire du Littoral, MedPAN, Conservation Collective, and WWF Greece, coordinated by the PIM Initiative and funded by the MAVA Foundation.
